Salmon need cold, clear and clean water to survive. In winter, more rain and earlier snowmelt increase the risk of floods that can destroy salmon spawning grounds. In summer, low flows reduce the quantity and quality of salmon habitat. Warmer water temperatures physically stress the fish and block migration routes.

Climate change could also shift the ranges of roots and berries. Scientists project that air temperatures in the Pacific Northwest will increase 3°F by the 2040s, and even relatively small increases in temperature can alter conditions that sustain life. With temperatures changing too quickly for native plants to adapt, their range may shift north or to higher elevations for cooler temperatures. Some may become extinct.

The Umatilla’s First Foods have deep history, extending back to original creation beliefs. What’s new is the application of this tradition to modern land management decisions affecting all of the reservation’s 178,000 acres – from the salmon that spawn in the floodplains to huckleberries growing in the mountains, and beyond to other lands where the tribe has rights to harvest and gather traditional foods.

The Umatilla might be the first tribe in the nation to use foods served at the Longhouse table to guide the way they protect, restore and manage natural resources. The First Foods promise to take care of water, fish, game, roots and berries continues to serve the Umatilla as they adapt to a changing landscape.

Theo Colborn is Founder and President of The Endocrine Disruption Exchange (TEDX), based in Paonia, Colorado, and Professor Emeritus of Zoology at the University of Florida, Gainesville. She is an environmental health analyst, and best known for her studies on the health effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals. Dr. Colborn’s work has prompted the enactment of new laws around the world and redirected the research of academicians, governments, and the private sector.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

In 2010 (the latest year for which we had data) New York City added 54 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (equivalent) to the atmosphere, but that number means little to most people because few of us have a sense of scale for atmospheric pollution.

Carbon Visuals and the Environmental Defense Fund wanted to make those emissions feel a bit more real – the total emissions and the rate of emission. Designed to engage the ‘person on the street’, this version is exploratory and still work in progress.

54,349,650 million tons a year = 148,903 tons a day = 6,204 tons an hour = 1.72 tons a second

At standard pressure and 59 °F a metric ton of carbon dioxide gas would fill a sphere 33 feet across (density of CO₂ = 1.87 kg/m³). If this is how New York’s emissions actually emerged we would see one of these spheres emerge every 0.58 seconds.

Emissions in 2010 were 12% less than 2005 emissions. The City of New York is on track to reduce emissions by 30% by 2017 – an ambitious target.

The video highlights the concerns and challenges facing the Coast Guard charged with its protection, the grave doubts of the scientific community about the lack of knowledge in this area, and the perspectives of those who depend on the Arctic Ocean for their livelihood.

Scientists in the Arctic are warning that this summer’s record-breaking melt is part of an accelerating trend with profound implications.

“Norwegian researchers report that the sea ice is becoming significantly thinner and more vulnerable. Last month, the annual thaw of the region’s floating ice reached the lowest level since satellite monitoring began, more than 30 years ago. It is thought the scale of the decline may even affect Europe’s weather. The melt is set to continue for at least another week – the peak is usually reached in mid-September – while temperatures here remain above freezing…”

An overview of the Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement (KBRA) and the Klamath Hydroelectric Settlement Agreement (KHSA), from the perspective of the Yurok Tribe.

These historic and controversial agreements set the stage for the largest dam removal effort in world history. This video attempts to clarify some of the issues. The Yurok Tribe is one of the last remaining tribes in the Pacific Northwest with a vibrant and viable salmon culture. They have a hard-earned legal right for both subsistence and commercial salmon fishing. The health of the tribe is directly connected to the health of the river. Removing the dams is the most significant act possible for restoring the balance to the Klamath River system.

Solving the Klamath Crisis: Keeping Farms and Fish Alive takes an in-depth look at the role dams play in the decline of Klamath River salmon and rural communities. The fishing and farming communities of the Klamath Basin are stuck in a rotating crisis whereby one year fishing is restricted and the next irrigation is curtailed. The dam owner, PacifiCorp, has not been held accountable for their impacts to the river and the rural communities that depend on it — until now.

With the relicensing of the Klamath dams, Klamath Basin communities have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dramatically improve the health of the river by removing dams that have outlived their use. Solving the Klamath Crisis chronicles the struggle of Tribes, farmers, and fishermen who are tired of the endless court battles and rivalry, and are now working together on lasting solutions to resource issues in the Klamath Basin.

Ashley Funk is an 18-year old from western Pennsylvania. Ashley is many things. She is an identical twin, the founder of Pollution Patrol, a volunteer at the local care home, and she loves to sing with her friends around campfires. Ashley is asking our leaders to recognize that environmental destruction is the destruction of human health and, in turn, realize that we have the potential for change. Ashley has done extensive research in preparation for a career as an environmental engineer and policy maker and she knows that we are not stuck in a society where we must rely on destructive fossil fuels to power our energy needs. We have the technology to move beyond this. Ashley is asking the government to come up with a climate recovery plan that does not destroy our single most essential resource… the atmosphere.

The Other Inconvenient Truth: How Agriculture is Changing the Face of Our Planet. We typically think of climate change as the biggest environmental issue we face today. But maybe it’s not? In this presentation, Jonathan Foley shows how agriculture and land use are maybe a bigger culprit in the global environment, and could grow even larger as we look to feed over 9 billion people in the future.

Environmental devastation of the land, water, and air – the largest industrial energy project in the world is extracting crude oil from bitumen found beneath the pristine boreal forest of Alberta, Canada. Effecting a land mass equivalent in size to Florida or England, Both industry and government are putting money before the health and security of its people and the environment. Tar sands take 3 barrels of water to process every barrel of oil extracted. Ninety percent of this water becomes so toxic that it must be stored in tailing ponds. Unfortunately these ponds regularly leach pollution into the third largest watershed in the world. Water depletion, exploitation, privatization and contamination has become one of the most important issues facing humanity this century.

This World Water Day, 22 March 2012, we look at Bolivia’s glaciers, which are melting at an alarming rate. Farming communities on the slopes beneath the Illimani glacier in La Paz have land to farm, but not enough water to grow the crops they need to feed and sustain their families. Organizations like Christian Aid partner Agua Sustentable are measuring impacts and piloting schemes like reservoirs, to maximise water usage in these communities. Climate change is a global issue. We all need to take action.

What does environmental devastation actually look like? At TEDxVictoria, photographer Garth Lenz shares shocking photos of the Alberta Tar Sands mining project — and the beautiful (and vital) ecosystems under threat.

For almost twenty years, Garth’s photography of threatened wilderness regions, devastation, and the impacts on indigenous peoples, has appeared in the world’s leading publications. His recent images from the boreal region of Canada have helped lead to significant victories and large new protected areas in the Northwest Territories, Quebec, and Ontario. Garth’s major touring exhibit on the Tar Sands premiered on Los Angeles in 2011 and recently appeared in New York. Garth is a Fellow of the International League Of Conservation Photographers

Energy-related economic, security, and environmental threats are intensifying the national conversation about how to regain energy leadership and competitiveness, restore jobs and prosperity, and build a secure and climate-safe energy system. Yet America lacks a comprehensive vision of how a market economy can achieve these transformational goals. RMI has that vision, and is now building its detailed roadmap, which we call Reinventing Fire™. This strategy will bring together RMIs 28 years of innovation and engage the world in our most ambitious and important work yet—using whole-system thinking and integrative design to move the U.S. off fossil fuels by 2050, led by business for profit.

Reinventing Fire: Bold Business Solutions for the New Energy Era offers market-based, actionable solutions integrating transportation, buildings, industry, and electricity. Built on Rocky Mountain Institute’s 30 years of research and collaboration in all four sectors, Reinventing Fire maps pathways for running a 158%-bigger U.S. economy in 2050 but needing no oil, no coal, no nuclear energy, one-third less natural gas, and no new inventions. This would cost $5 trillion less than business-as-usual—in addition to the value of avoiding fossil fuels’ huge but uncounted external costs.

On the Season Premiere of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution filmed in Los Angeles and aired on April 12, 2011, Jamie demonstrates how 70% of America’s ground beef contains leftover cow parts (a.k.a. “pink slime”) containing e.coli and salmonella that has been treated with ammonia. Ammonia treated meat can be found in virtually all conventional grocery stores, fast food restaurants, many national restaurant chains, and school cafeterias. The saddest part is that the USDA allows this ammonia treated meat to enter the marketplace and with no labeling requirement on the packaging to inform the consumer that the meat their about to buy contains ammonia, thus hiding the truth and pulling a wool over the consumer’s eye. This is certainly a rude awakening to the majority of Americans that don’t know where the meat in their fridge, the meat in their conventional local grocery store, the meat in their fast food hamburger, and the meat in their restaurant made hamburger comes from. How do you avoid this poison? Buy beef that has come from grass fed cows, which can be found at natural and organic grocery stores and your local farmers market. No matter the size of your town or city, grass fed beef (real beef) is not out of reach. Unlike ammonia treated beef, grass fed beef is clearly labeled and contains no ammonia.

Even if we are able to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times, Earth could likely see drastic and rapid climate change this century, new research by NASA’s Jim Hansen suggests. Paleoclimate data paints a different picture than models about the sensitivity of the climate system. Detailed analysis of the Earth’s paleoclimate history of recent interglacial periods reveals we are less than a degree Celsius away from equaling a time when sea level was several meters higher than it is today.

Sitting atop the continental divide, in the northern Rocky Mountains of the United States, lies Butte, Montana, a town that boasts a rich and colorful mining history. Today Butte stands as America’s largest superfund site, or in other words, the most heavily polluted area in the United States. Among the many miles of superfund in Butte and Quietly tucked behind Butte’s infamous Berkeley Pit, sits the Yankee Doodle Tailings Pond. At over 3 times the size of the Berkeley Pit, the Yankee Doodle Tailings dam is one of the world’s largest earthen dams.

The consequences of mining are permanent when it comes to the Yankee Doodle Tailings Pond. Although the damage to the Butte landscape is irreversible, the hard lessons learned here can and should be applied to mining operations around the world, so that this magnitude of pollution can never occur again.

We’ve filmed the Columbia River Gorge, Mt Hood, Mt Jefferson, the Southwestern Coast, the Alvord Desert, Leslie Gulch, Blue Mountains, Crater Lake, Eagle Cap Wilderness, Deschutes River, and more. Mia Birk, former manager of City of Portland’s Bicycle Program (1993-99), and Mark Lear of the Portland Office of Transportation explain a few of the many strategies employed to keep thru traffic off the boulevards and to make the riders using them safe.

Portland: Quest for the Livable City is a documentary film and educational outreach project produced as a collaboration of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and Northern Light Productions. Incorporating historic footage of Portland’s growth as the self-proclaimed “City that Works,” and recent interviews with city leaders and neighborhood residents during the battles over ballot measures on the land-use planning system, this one-hour documentary film chronicles the complex challenges of aspiring to be a more sustainable metropolis with a smaller carbon footprint. As cities across the country today attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, invest in transit, and focus on infill redevelopment as an alternative to car-dependent sprawl, the experience of Portland provides a cautionary tale for planning in the 21st century, involving issues of economic development, gentrification, local food and farming, property rights, and civic participation.

The Traditional Native American Farmers Association, also known as TNAFA, held its 16th Annual Indigenous Sustainable Communities Design Course July 2011, in collaboration with Hopi Tutskwa Permaculture in Northern Arizona. TNAFA has been working since 1992 to increase the Native community’s interest in agriculture, especially the youth. Instructor Lilian Hill taught a natural building workshop on the Hopi Reservation, where agricultural methods date back as far as the 1500s. ISCD students learned the basics of traditional Hopi cob earth building and the essential elements of building a home with heart. The results of their collective efforts were the construction of an earthen bread oven and bench in the village of Kykotsmovi.

The United States isn’t broke; we’re the richest country on the planet and a country in which the richest among us are doing exceptionally well. But the truth is, our economy is broken, producing more pollution, greenhouse gasses and garbage than any other country. In these and so many other ways, it just isn’t working. But rather than invest in something better, we continue to keep this ‘dinosaur economy’ on life support with hundreds of billions of dollars of our tax money. The Story of Broke calls for a shift in government spending toward investments in clean, green solutions—renewable energy, safer chemicals and materials, zero waste and more—that can deliver jobs AND a healthier environment. It’s time to rebuild the American Dream; but this time, let’s build it better.
